“I just want my life back. And it’s been 13 years and it's enough.”

She may have sung “I’m a slave for you” on her 2001 hit, but yesterday Britney Spears made it clear to an LA court: she’s ready to be freed. For years, Britney has stayed silent on the fan-run #FreeBritney movement. That all changed yesterday when she spoke to an LA judge about her conservatorship situation that began in 2008. If you are unaware, since Britney Spears had her mental health crisis in 2008, she has been placed under a legal conservatorship which is the “appointment of a guardian or a protector by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another person due to old age or physical or mental limitations”. June 22, 2021 marks the first day Spears has addressed her situation publicly through the court system, making disturbing allegations towards the heads of her conservatorship: mainly her father Jamie Spears and her court-appointed lawyers. Today we’ll be running down three of the most important (and most disturbing) things we learned through Britney from yesterday’s court appearance.

1. Forced Medication

Before I talk about the allegation of forced medication, I want to name a few things Britney Spears has done under the conservatorship that renders her “mentally limited”. She has released FOUR studio albums, been a judge on X-Factor, headlined a FOUR year Las Vegas residency that brought in over $130 MILLION dollars (breaking the record for the highest grossing single concert in a theatre residency ever in Las Vegas), AND performed a 31 date tour across the US and Europe in 2018, all while memorizing choreography and completing rehearsals for hours a day. Does that sound like someone who is so “mentally incapable” that she can’t drive her CAR by herself? I don’t think so sweetie. Britney told the courtroom that when she disagreed with choreography being pitched to her for her Domination Residency (that ended up not going through, in which she was forced to agree to after her original residency) she was sat down by her therapist, lectured about her not “co-operating in rehearsals” and put on Lithium. "Lithium is a very, very strong and completely different medication compared to what I was used to.. You can go mentally impaired if you take too much, if you stay on it longer than five months. But he put me on that, and I felt drunk," Spears said. "Not only did my family not do a goddamn thing, my dad was all for it," she said. "Anything that happened to me had to be approved by my dad." The disturbing thing about these very serious allegations are that the 39 year old superstar seems to have zero consent to any of this and her handlers are making decisions about her health and body. Jail!

“I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized. You know, fake it till you make it. But now I’m telling you the truth, OK? I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

2. Reproductive Rights Stripped 

Britney Spears is not only one of the greatest living legends we have in 2021 but she’s also an amazing mother. Proven on her Instagram, where all she posts is about her precious kids, it’s clear Britney’s kids bring her so much happiness. Which is why the allegation she made yesterday is even more disgusting. “I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” Britney said. “I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children — any more children.” Britney has been dating her boyfriend, Sam Asghari since 2016 and the two are always posting the cutest pics and Insta stories. And he’s been a king supporting Britney all the way - he’s made numerous posts supporting #FreeBritney, come out publicly against Jamie Spears, all while being hot as f*ck. We have to stan!

3. No Financial Independence 

“They are used to me sort of doing a weekly routine for them. And I’m over it. I don’t feel like I owe them anything at this point. They need to be reminded they actually work for me.” The pop icon has an estimated net worth of $60-$70 million but sees close to none of it. Jamie Spears is being paid $16,000 a month ($192,000 a year) to be the main conservator to his daughter while she gets a weekly allowance of $2,000. Something’s not adding up here. Britney Spears has been working in the industry since before she was 10 years old and DESERVES access to the finances SHE has brought in. That’s why the Britney Army in the past few years have been apprehensive to stream her catalogue on streaming services, or even buy merchandise such as vinyls, because she sees none of the profits while it subsequently makes more money for the powerful people that control her.

If you were unaware of the dire situation Britney Spears was in, I hope this article has opened your eyes. This is not a fan-made conspiracy. This is a modern day human rights violation. We need to turn up for our girl just like she turned up for us throughout our childhoods. There's a reason she is an LGBT icon and right now she needs our support all the way. Just because it’s happening to one of the most famous people on the planet, doesn’t mean we should take it any less seriously.
